mayorThe momentum is continuing. Jeffersonville is among four winners of the 2014 Primacy of Place Community Awards from Building Better Communities, the outreach and engagement division of Ball State University for the Big Four Bridge and Big Four Station project.

This award means a great deal to me because it shines a light on our innovative approaches. Improving Jeffersonville attracts a well-qualified and talented workforce which in turn attracts new businesses. In fact, Building Better Communities believes that the presence of talent is the single most important ingredient in sustaining local economic development and "quality of place" is a primary factor in a community's ability to attract and retain talent.

I could not be more proud of our city at this moment. Improving the quality of life for everyone who visits, lives and does business in Jeffersonville remains the top priority of my administration and is the lens through which we view all of our initiatives. It is very rewarding to receive the recognition of our efforts. This prestigious award confirms what everyone can easily see. The City of Jeffersonville is on the pathway to progress and we are focused on the right things that will determine a vibrant, economic future both now and for our children in the decades to come.

Walks of Life: New Crosswalks improve quality of life

Jeffersonville welcomes new Creative Crosswalks to Downtown, an initiative by City Canvas. Philip Collins, the artist of the crosswalk at the corner of Spring St. and Maple St. designed an IMG 1522carrangement of various classic candies in honor of Schimpff's Confectionery.

Collins said, "It was inspired by Schimpff's which is a nearby business that has been creating candy for over 100 years. I'm a huge fan of Schimpff's and they have brought so much joy to the Jeffersonville community for so long"

IMG 1501cMiranda Becht, a Masters of Fine Arts Student at University of Louisville. Becht graduated from IU Southeast with Bachelors of Fine Arts degrees in Ceramics and Arts in Printmaking. Her crosswalk is located where Spring St. meets the river near the River Stage. "My 'Tuneful Fish' depicts happy fish jumping from waves as they play musical instruments amid music notes," she says. "My waves not only represent the river, but also mimic a music staff. I hope River Stage attendees and Jeff citizens alike enjoy my whimsical design."

Both Collins and Becht believe that art culture is vitally important to the Jeffersonville community. Becht said, "The city has done a great job and is in a very unique spot with the opening of the Big Four Bridge. Having these art pieces in the city not only gives people nice things to look at, but also boosts morale and gives us something to be proud of."
