Summer officially kicks off in our city this weekend!  The Jeffersonville Aquatic Center opens for the season at 12noon on Saturday May 25th.  Later, at 7:00 p.m., head downtown to Jeffersonville RiverStage and enjoy a beautiful evening of music featuring 100% Poly and special guest Wax Factory!  If you want a great seat on the lawn, be sure to get there early. And you’ll be hungry so we’ve of course got that covered.  Cold beverages will be provided by Cluckers and food by Dogs on the Run. I hope I see you there!

In addition, Jeffersonville wants to be more bicycle and pedestrian friendly to continue our mission to Get Healthy!  Shane Corbin, Jeffersonville’s Director of Planning and Zoning, asked me to encourage everyone who is interested in biking and walking to attend a public meeting, starting at 6:00pm, on Wednesday, May 29th at City Council Chambers in City Hall.  We are currently developing a Bicycle and Pedestrian Comprehensive Plan to coordinate the development of our walking and bicycle facilities.  The project is currently in its draft plan stage and the team will be presenting to the public, based on previous public meetings, their plans for new bicycle and walking routes throughout the city.

It’s going to be a wonderful summer in Jeffersonville.  The best is yet to come!

JEFFERSONVILLE MAYOR MIKE MOORE ANNOUNCES 100 DAY WELLNESS CHALLENGE

If you made a resolution to get fit this year, Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore is offering a new program to help you reach your goals.  The Live Healthy Challenge is a way for city employees and residents to make lifestyle changes in the coming year.

"I want Jeffersonville to be a healthy and active community.  This program provides an easy, cost-efficient way to kick-start physical activity and improved nutrition.  Through programs like this one and the Mayor's Fitness Council we have a goal to make our community healthy," said Moore.

The program is in conjunction with an online platform from the non-profit Live Healthy America, which allows for the formation of teams to track physical activity, weight loss, or both from January 28 through April 5, 2013.  It also provides meal plans, video workouts, healthy recipes and nutrition and wellness resources.  Live Healthy America charges $20.00 for each participant and includes a year-long subscription to a national lifestyle magazine and a t-shirt.  Registration is open

Moore is encouraging city employees to participate and hopes local businesses will do the same.  "We are striving for a healthy workplace.  I am challenging city employees to join me in by taking part in this program.  One way we can help drive down lifestyle-related health care costs is to create and sustain an environment of wellness in City Hall," said Moore who noted that the Building Authority installed a shower on the third floor for employees to utilize.  "If we want employees to become more physically active, we need to make it more convenient for them to exercise and achieve a healthy lifestyle.  The city's health insurance costs place a heavy burden on the city budget.  One way to lessen that burden is to encourage our employees to make changes in their lifestyle."

Indiana was named the 15th most obese state in the country, according to a 2011report from Trust for America's Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). Meanwhile, Indiana's adult obesity rate is 29.1 percent.

“Research shows that exercise at work works,” said Moore. According to a federal study, worksites and offices with a physical activity program reduced their costs by 20 percent to 50 percent, reduced short-term sick level by 6 percent to 32 percent and increased productivity by 2 percent to 52 percent.

The 10-week challenge is a team-centric program focused on activity and weight management. "It will be a fun, inspirational way to achieve your wellness goals," said Moore.  "I am issuing a challenge to everyone to join.  By actively taking part in the program participants can motivate, educate and empower themselves to make positive and lasting lifestyle changes to achieve optimal health."

CityPride Needs Your Help on Saturday!

CityPrideThis Saturday, CityPride will be completing a large number of projects.  Our tasks include:

-plant annuals in downtown planters
-plant annuals at Allison Lane/Middle Road
-plant annuals in planters at City Hall
-plant annuals in Court Avenue medians
-plant annuals in Children’s Garden at Warder Park

We also are working hard to transplant landscaping around the welcome signs to be moved for the downtown I-65 bridge project and to move the signs themselves.  This is a lot of work, and it is adding greatly to the normal workload of our base of volunteers so we are hoping that we might get a few extra volunteers to help us with our regular planting.   If you can spare an hour or two on Saturday to help, or if you know someone who can help (giant, strong people are our favorites), we would be eternally grateful.  You don’t have to know anything about gardening; we give very simple, explicit instructions.  We also will tell you every 15 minutes how much we love you.

If you would like to assist, we will be starting at 10 AM Saturday with a very brief dedication ceremony in the Children’s Garden at Warder Park.  Kids from Thomas Jefferson Elementary made ceramic bugs and slugs, and their teacher, Cathy Gruninger, is going to “install” them in the perennial beds.  This will take about 10 minutes.  After the ceremony, we will be gathering in the parking lot behind LifeSpring for assignments.  Our work will last until at least 3:00, (unless we get 1 billion helpers!), so you can jump in at any time.  Just look for the people in the blue CityPride shirts.

Thanks in advance for helping, if you can, or for telling your 6’3”, 235-lb, 17-year-old son that he has to come help if he wants to use the car Saturday night.
