Officers Honored

Mayor Tom Galligan and Chief Tim Deeringer recognized 10 Jeffersonville police officers during the Police Merit Commission meeting on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, for their actions on the night of February 19, 2009.

That evening, Corporal Dan Lawhorn and Patrolman Keith Broady were critically wounded when they were shot while investigating a report of suspicious activity at a Jeffersonville motel.

Galligan and Deeringer recognized Lawhorn and Broady, as well as responding officers Lt. Col. Kevin Morlan, Cpl. Greg Sumler, and Patrolmen Steve Cooper, Steve Dean Jr., Denver Leverett, Tom Mitchell, Sam Moss and Connie Viers.

Police Merit Commission

The Jeffersonville Fire Merit Commission meets at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the City Council Conference Room at City Hall, 500 Quartermaster Court.

The Police Merit Commission was created by City Council resolution 2008-R-030 and amended with resolution 2009-R-017under the authority granted by Indiana Code 36-8-3.5. The Commission is responsible for hiring, disciplinary actions and promotions within the police department. Under Indiana Code, its five members include appointments by the mayor (two), City Council (one) and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 100 (two).

The Police Merit Commission will not consider applications for employment that come from sources other than the city's Human Resources Department.

Records Division (Incident and Vehicle Crash Reports)

The Jeffersonville Police Records Division is open 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday and is closed on weekends and public holidays. Reports are generally available to the public three business days after the report was submitted to police.

There is no charge for copies of incident reports.

Copies of vehicle crash reports cost $5 each if picked up in person or $12 each if accessed online at buycrash.com. Please note that buycrash.com is a third-party provider of crash reports that is owned by Open Portal Solutions (formerly Holt Sheets) of Greenwood, Indiana and utilized by law enforcement agencies such as the Jeffersonville Police Department and Indiana State Police.

Handguns are regulated by Indiana Code 35-47-2. Online applications for handgun permits are available online from the Indiana State Police, including answers to frequently asked questions.

The Jeffersonville Police Department completes handgun permit applications between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays.

Special Events/Street and Clark Memorial Bridge Closures

Captain Don Grimes coordinates the Jeffersonville Police Department's efforts relating to special events and the closures of streets and the Clark Memorial Bridge (commonly referred to as the Second Street Bridge), the latter of which is done in conjunction with the Louisville Metro Police Department for special events -- such as charity walks -- that include the bridge.

Vehicle Identification Number Checks

Indiana Code 9-18-2 establishes the requirements for vehicle registration and licensing within the State of Indiana. New residents have 60 days from the date of residency to register and plate any vehicles that were legally registered and licensed in another state. Car dealers will generally provide buyers with temporary tags that give them 30 days to register and plate vehicles.

Any vehicles brought from another state to be registered and licensed in Indiana must undergo a Vehicle Identification Number check from local police. The Jeffersonville Police Department provides this service free of charge from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays.
