New Generator at City Hall

A new backup generator was installed at City Hall on Thursday, June 10, 2010, because the generator that was installed when the building opened in 2006 was able to handle only about one-third of City Hall's power needs during an electrical outage.

In January, the city's peak amp usage was around 700. The new generator is certified up to 1,044 amps, while the old generator was less than 250.

The old generator only provided enough power for computers, the air conditioning system for the computer server room, police 911 and some lighting. The new diesel-powered generator can run for 48 hours at peak capacity without refueling and will likely run for about four days with the city's regular electric load.

Weather events that caused power losses -- dating to 2008 -- prompted the generator upgrade.

The $100,000 cost was paid for from City Hall Building Authority reserves, which are intended for used building upkeep and some capital projects. The old generator was moved to Fire Station No. 1, located at the intersection of Eighth and Wall streets.
